Sources of Sophora Root Extract
The plant Sophora Flavescens is a Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for anti-tumor, viral hepatitis, enteritis, viral myocarditis, arrhythmia, and skin diseases. It is sometimes referred to as Kushen or Ku Shen, and within the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine is known to have 'cooling' and antiphlogistic (anti-inflammatory) properties.
Sophora flavescens extract is an herbal powder derived from the root of the sophora flavescens plant. It has a long history of medicinal use in China, where it is still used to help treat a wide range of diseases including dysentery, edema and eczema.
Ingredients of Sophora Root Extract
Overall, Sophora Flavescens appears to contain 3.3% Alkaloids and 1.5% Flavanoids.Specific components are:
•Matrine at 0.21-1.12mg/g (seen as the main compound) and Oxymatrine at 1.94-8.77mg/g, as well as the structurally related Sophoridine (0.13-0.62mg/g) and Oxysophorodine
•Isokurarinone and Norkurarinone, both modifications of Kurarinone
•Kurarinol (as well as neokurarinol and norkurarinol
•Kuraidin, Kuraridine, and Kushenol H,K (prenylated flavanoids) and X
•Kushecarpins A-C and Kushinol A-O
•Leachianone G
•L-Maackiain
•Trifolirhizin
•Sophoflavescenol
A variety of bioactives, but Matrine and the related two structures are the most commonly referred to molecules for being 'active' in Sophora Flavescens although some others (the prenylated flavanoids) may be bioactive.
Specification of Sophora Root Extract
Study of Sophora Root Extract
1.Matrine, one of the main components extracted from Sophora flavescens, has displayed anti-cancer activity in several types of cancer cells in vitro.
2.Matrine possesses strong antitumor activities in vitro and in vivo. Inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis are the likely mechanisms responsible for matrine's antitumor activities.
3.It promotes hair growth, possibly due to 5-alpha-reductase inhibitory activity.
4.It can reduce the toxicity and adverse effects caused by chemotherapy.
5.It is anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant.
